Reasons to Make Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

  • Affordable: Making spaghetti sauce at home is easy, delicious, and way more affordable than restaurant prices!
  • Quality Ingredients: Fresh ingredients make the best sauce and it tastes way better!
  • Food Storage: You can easily prepare this sauce and have plenty for leftovers or for freezing and using later.

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Homemade spaghetti sauce is a classic recipe that can be prepared quickly and one everyone will love. This simple sauce is not only nostalgic but classic for a good reason. You’ll love the flavorful tomato base and the combination of the beef and sausage. And to make it even better, it’s finished off with fresh herbs and parmesan cheese. My family can not get enough of it!

It’s the perfect spaghetti sauce to use in multiple recipes. Make a big batch and use it in recipes like this sheet pan lasagna, rigatoni, or this easy spaghetti pie!

Ingredients in Spaghetti Meat Sauce

Everyone has their favorite recipe, but the best sauces are often the most basic. Use simple ingredients to make this delicious homemade spaghetti sauce.

Ingredients labeled to make homemade spaghetti sauce.
  • Olive Oil: choose a high-quality olive oil to brown the meat and sauté the onions and garlic. This will only add to the flavor.
  • Ground Beef: the type of ground beef is entirely up to and you can also switch out the ground beef for ground sausage.
  • Yellow Onion: the onion brings a mild bite to the sauce which is a key flavor in spaghetti sauce.
  • Garlic Cloves: these minced cloves bring the most powerful flavor that is so common in Italian recipes. Using freshly minced garlic will also bring about the best flavor.
  • Tomato Paste: adding the tomato paste helps to thicken the sauce, but it also brings a strong flavor that is heightened when stirred in and cooked after the onions and garlic are cooked.
  • Diced Tomatoes or Crushed Tomatoes: for a smoother sauce use crushed tomatoes and for a chunkier sauce go with diced tomatoes. Either one makes a delicious sauce.
  • Water: this helps to bring the sauce together and you may use more or less to thicken or thin it.
  • Sugar: This helps balance the acidity of the tomatoes with a little sweetness.
  • Worcestershire: The umami flavor this brings to the sauce makes the meatiness deeper and more complex.
  • Italian Seasoning: this classic spice adds a peppery flavor to the sauce.
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese: Adding parmesan cheese is optional, but strongly suggested for that delicious cheesy flavor.
  • Fresh Basil: the fresh aroma of this peppery-flavored leaf also adds a small hint of mint.

How to Make Spaghetti Sauce

Follow my easy step-by-step instructions below for making homemade spaghetti sauce. You’re going to love this recipe!

  1. Brown the Meat: Add 1 tablespoon of the olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage and cook until no pink remains, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Use a slotted spoon to remove the meat from the pan and drain the fat, except for a couple of tablespoons you may leave in the pan.
  2. Sauté the Onions and Garlic: Add the remaining olive oil and the onions to the pan and cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until the onions turn translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute, until the garlic is very fragrant.
  3. Add the Cooked Meat and Simmer the Sauce: Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another minute. Once the tomato paste becomes fragrant, add the meat and the remaining ingredients except the parmesan cheese and basil. Cook until boiling. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes.
  4. Stir in Cheese and Basil: Stir the parmesan and basil into the finished sauce and serve over your choice of noodles.

Instant Pot Instructions

It’s easy to make spaghetti sauce in the Instant Pot! Follow these instructions for using the instant pot:

  1. Brown the Meat: Push the “sauté” button to heat the olive oil. Brown the meat and use a slotted spoon to remove it.
  2. Add Onion and Garlic: Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and then sauté the onion for 4 minutes and then add the garlic to cook for an additional 1 minute.
  3. Add Remaining Ingredients: Add the remaining ingredients except for the parmesan and basil.
  4. Seal and Cook: Cover and seal the lid. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 10 minutes. When the time is up let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes and move the valve to vent.
  5. Stir in Cheese and Enjoy: Remove the lid and stir in the grated parmesan.

Tips for Making the Best Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Make homemade spaghetti sauce just the way you like it! You have the control to choose the consistency, adjust the seasonings, or make it meatless. Here’s how:

  • Thinner Sauce: For a thinner sauce, that is big on tomato chunks use canned diced tomatoes.
  • Thicker Sauce: Use crushed tomatoes for a smoother sauce that has a thicker base to it.
  • Garlic: You can add more than 5 garlic cloves for added flavor. You can also substitute 1 tablespoon of garlic powder if you dislike the fresh garlic pieces’ texture.
  • Sugar: I think sugar is the secret ingredient because it enhances the tomatoes’ sweetness and balances out the acidity. You may omit the sugar if you prefer.
  • Herbs: Italian seasoning has all the wonderful herbs that add flavor to this sauce, but you may add additional oregano and fresh basil if you’d like to intensify the herbs.
  • Meatless: You can easily leave the meat out of this sauce for more of a marinara-type sauce. If you choose to leave out the meat I suggest using a 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes and a 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes.

How to Store Spaghetti Sauce

Homemade spaghetti sauce is perfect for storing in the fridge and the freezer! I like to make a big batch to have on hand in the freezer for busy days.

  • In the Refrigerator: Place the spaghetti sauce in an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • In the Freezer: This sauce can easily be frozen and saved for later. To freeze the sauce let it come to room temperature before placing it in a ziptop bag or an air-tight storage container. Make sure to include the date. The sauce will last for about 6 months in the freezer.

Basil Vinaigrette is a versatile dressing made from a few fresh ingredients. It is bursting with flavor and can be used on salads, as a marinade, or as a sauce for various dishes!

If you’re like me and love having a fresh basil plant in your kitchen window, this dressing is perfect for using up those extra leaves! Other recipes I have that use fresh basil leaves include these caprese skewers, my tomato basil soup, and my avocado basil pasta.

Side view of cute glass container with basil vinaigrette in side.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Quick and Easy: Toss all the ingredients into a blender or food processor and let it do all the work! It’s ready in less than 5 minutes!
  • Simple Ingredients: There are only six ingredients, and you probably already have them on hand!
  • Flavor: The use of fresh ingredients makes this sauce so flavorful it will elevate any dish.

Basil Vinaigrette Recipe

This dressing is truly versatile, and there are countless ways to use it. Use it to brighten up a green salad or as a dip for vegetables and cheese. For a delicious twist on Caprese, drizzle it over ripe garden tomatoes and creamy mozzarella.

It also works wonders as a marinade for beef, shrimp, salmon, or chicken. I personally enjoy tossing it into pasta salad or spreading it over pizza dough as a flavorful sauce alternative. The options are endless!

Ingredients Needed

If you are growing homemade basil in your garden, this is the perfect recipe for you! Grab these other few ingredients to make this simple vinaigrette dressing. Scroll down to the recipe card for exact measurements.

  • Fresh Basil: Provides a fresh herbal flavor that is the base for the vinaigrette.
  • Minced Shallot: Adds a depth of robust flavor.
  • Minced Garlic: Compliments the fresh herbs in this basil salad dressing.
  • Olive Oil: I prefer extra-virgin olive oil because of its flavor.
  • Red Wine Vinegar: Provides a tangy acidity that enhances and complements the basil, shallot, and garlic.
  • Salt & Pepper: This balances and enhances the flavors of everything in this recipe.
Overhead shot of labeled ingredients.

How to Make Basil Vinaigrette

You will love how simple this basil dressing is to put together. Once you have all of the ingredients, you simply have to blend them together. How awesome is that?

  1. Blend: Place all the ingredients into a blender, then blend until smooth.
  2. Salt & Pepper: Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

Basil Vinaigrette Variations

You will love how customizable this dressing is. You can easily replace, add, or omit ingredients to satisfy your specific tastes.

  • Vinegar Variations: You can use champagne vinegar, white wine, or balsamic vinegar instead of red wine vinegar. I don’t recommend regular white vinegar; it is too strong.
  • Add-Ins: You could add some Italian seasoning or your favorite seasonings to add more flavor!
  • Oil Options: You can replace the olive oil with another oil, like avocado oil. I wouldn’t use an oil with a strong flavor like coconut oil.
  • Flavor varieties: To enhance your vinaigrette, here are some suggestions. You can add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, or honey to sweeten or elevate its flavor. Start with small amounts and adjust gradually to suit your taste preferences.
Close up shot of a spoonful of basil vinaigrette.

How to Store Basil Vinaigrette

  1. Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  2. Freeze: You can make it last up to three months by freezing it. Freeze it in ice cube trays and then put the frozen cubes in sealed freezer bags so they don’t absorb other flavors. When you are ready to use it, make sure you give the frozen cubes time to thaw.

**When you go to use your refrigerated dressing again, you will need to shake it up, as the ingredients will probably separate.

    • Customize: You can customize this sauce any way you like. For instance, you could add more spice for extra heat or reduce it for a milder flavor. Alternatively, you might want to add some sweetness by mixing in a bit of brown sugar!
    • Mayonnaise Substitution: It is best to enjoy the thick, rich texture of Best Foods mayonnaise, but you can substitute it for Miracle Whip, ranch dressing, or even vegan mayo.
    • Make it Spicy: To make it hot, add crushed red pepper flakes, about ½ teaspoons at a time.
    • Ways to Use: This condiment is great with some of my favorite foods: onion rings, waffle fries, chicken tenders, burgers, chicken nuggets, and more!

    Storing Leftovers Campfire Fry Sauce

Leftover sauce will keep fresh for 5 days and there are so many ways to use it! We especially love it with a quick and easy batch of air fryer French fries!

    • In the Refrigerator: Store campfire sauce in an airtight container for five days. Give it a quick stir before using it!

    Homemade Boursin Cheese

Boursin cheese was created by François Boursin, who set out to make a delicious garlic and fresh herb-infused Gournay cheese. I’m absolutely in love with Boursin’s creamy texture and flavor. So, I decided to try making my own homemade version. There’s something so satisfying about making it with my favorite herbs and enjoying that rich, creamy goodness.

    What is in Boursin Cheese?

With the following ingredients, you can put together a flavorful, creamy cheese in no time. For exact measurements, scroll down to the recipe card below.

    • Cream Cheese: Acts as a base for your homemade spreadable, creamy cheese. Make sure you leave it out until it is soft or around room temperature.
    • Salted Butter: Adds a richness and smooth texture.
    • Garlic Powder: Gives the cheese a robust, savory flavor.
    • Fresh Chives: Adds a slight onion flavor.
    • Fresh Parsley: Provides a fresh, slightly peppery flavor and beautiful green color.
    • Salt: Enhances the flavors of all the other ingredients.
    • White Pepper: Balances the flavors from the herbs
    • Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese: Compliments the texture and adds a nutty, salty, umami flavor.

    1. Combine: Add all of the ingredients to a large bowl.
    2. Mix: Using an electric hand mixer, blend until smooth and creamy.
    3. Shape: Line a small bowl with saran wrap. Spoon the cheese mixture into the bowl lined with saran wrap, then wrap it tightly and refrigerate for 1 hour or until it holds its shape.
    4. Serve: Use it for any recipe that calls for Boursin cheese. You can also enjoy it as a spread for crackers or veggies!

    Tips and Variations

    • Serving Ideas: Boursin cheese is delicious in so many recipes! Enjoy it on baked or mashed potatoes. It’s perfect with crostini, crackers, and spread on bagels.
    • Switch Up the Herbs: Try experimenting with different herbs and flavors like basil, rosemary, or cilantro.
    • Add-ins: Add in more flavor and textures. Caramelized onion and roasted garlic pieces would be SO incredible.
    • Give it a Kick: If you like things spicy, then drizzle in some hot sauce or, alternatively, add red pepper flakes to kick up the heat!

How to Store and Serve Boursin Cheese

The great thing about this cheese is you can make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve or use in other recipes.

    • In the Refrigerator: Refrigerate the cheese in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
    • At Room Temperature: Boursin Cheese is best enjoyed at room temperature, so allow the cheese to sit at room temperature before serving.

    Cowboy queso in a skillet.

    Reasons You’ll Love This Recipe

    • It’s a Crowd Favorite: Queso is always a welcome dip and especially when it tastes as incredible as cowboy queso!
    • Easy to Make: Just a handful of ingredients and about 20 minutes is all you need for the best Mexican-style dip ever!
    • SO Addicting: This appetizer will be the hit of any party! Once you start dipping, you just can’t stop!

    What is Cowboy Queso?

This has quickly become my go-to dip when I need something easy that I know everyone will devour! Cowboy queso is very similar to our smoked queso dip, made with sausage and Velveeta cheese. However, this cowboy version is taken to the next level with the addition of beer, beans and corn! It’s quick and easy to whip up and makes a great appetizer for any occasion from parties to lazy weekends!

    Ingredients in Cowboy Queso

Velveeta cheese is a must in this dip because it’s incredibly melty and has the creamiest texture for dipping. Combine that with the sausage and all of the other flavorful ingredients, and you’ll have an amazing appetizer for game day, parties, or family get-togethers. Check out the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact measurements.

    • Mild Sausage: 1 pound cooked and crumbled.
    • Chili Powder: For a subtle kick of heat.
    • Onion powder: Gives this dip the perfect onion flavor.
    • Pale Ale Beer: Adds robust deep flavor.
    • Rotel: A delicious combination of diced tomatoes and green chilies.
    • Velveeta Cheese: Don’t try to substitute the Velveeta. You will love the creamy texture it gives the dip.
    • Monterey Jack Cheese: If you have the time, shred this yourself from a block. It will have the best flavor and melt more smoothly.
    • Black Beans: Rinse and drain for added fiber, flavor and texture.
    • Corn: Use canned or frozen corn for a hint of sweetness in every bite.
The top view of the ingredients for the dip, each individually labeled.

    For Serving

    • Garnish: A garnish of fresh cilantro, diced tomatoes, and sliced jalapeños adds color, texture and extra flavor.
    • Tortilla Chips: The classic option for any type of queso dip!

    Beer Replacement

Use chicken broth or beef broth to replace the beer in this recipe if you prefer!

This cowboy queso recipe requires little effort and has the best cheesy consistency and mouth-watering flavor! You won’t want to stop dipping!

    1. Cook the Sausage: In a large cast iron skillet, add the sausage. Cook and crumble over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Drain any grease once cooked through.
    2. Add Seasonings and Beer: Stir in the chili powder, onion powder, and beer. Allow the beer to cook and reduce for about 4-5 minutes.
    3. Add Cheese: Add the Velveeta and Monterey Jack cheeses. Reduce the heat to medium and melt the cheese, stirring occasionally.
    4. Add the Beans, Corn, and Rotel: Once the cheese is melted, stir in the beans, corn, and Rotel tomatoes and heat through for about 5 minutes.
    5. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with chopped cilantro, diced tomatoes, and jalapeños. Serve warm with chips!

    Cowboy Queso in the Crockpot

Cook and brown the sausage over the stove then drain any excess grease. Add all of the remaining ingredients to the crock pot. Cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 hours.

    Tips and Variations

Here are some suggestions for ways that you can customize this dip to make it your own and ideas for fun serving options!

    • Swap the Meat: The sausage adds great flavor, but ground beef, chicken, or pork all work! Season with taco seasoning and cook before adding. Cooked chicken breast or carne asada would also be super tasty.
    • Add More Spice: Add spicy Rotel, hot sausage, sautéed diced jalapeños, a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of your favorite hot sauce for an extra fiery kick.
    • Serve With: Cowboy queso dip is delicious served with a variety of dippers like tortilla chips, pretzel bites, toasted bread, or even vegetables like celery and bell peppers.

    Creamy Avocado Dressing Recipe

Skip using store-bought dressing! This homemade avocado dressing is packed with the most wonderful fresh flavor without any additives or preservatives! It’s super creamy thanks to the greek yogurt, which also gives it a boost of protein!

What I really love is the addition of fresh cilantro and lime juice. It is so good served on this hearty beef taco salad and this chili lime chicken salad. But don’t limit it to salads, try it on this cilantro grilled chicken and these chicken lettuce wraps.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

This creamy lime avocado dressing recipe comes together easily with just a handful of simple ingredients. It has the best refreshing flavor and creamy texture—you’re going to love it! Exact measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

    • Avocado: You can use any variety of avocados. I especially like using Haas avocados because they’re extra rich and creamy.
    • Greek Yogurt: Keeps the calories lower while adding protein and major creaminess.
    • Lime Juice: Adds fresh flavor and acidity.
    • Fresh Cilantro: Has a mix of lemon-citrus flavor with a bit of a peppery taste.
    • Garlic: Fresh garlic will give this dressing the best flavor.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar: This balances the richness of the avocado and yogurt.
    • Honey: Adds just a hint of sweetness.
    • Salt & Black Pepper: To enhance and bring out all of the flavors.
    • Water: For the perfect dressing consistency.

    How to Make Avocado Dressing

You just need a blender and about 10 minutes, and you’ll have a delicious dressing that you’ll want to put on almost everything! Here are the simple instructions of how to mix everything together:

    1. Blend: Place all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Add more water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
    2. Pour: Pour the dressing from the blender into a sealable container. Use right away or store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    Tips and Variations

It’s so easy to customize this avocado dressing recipe! Switch it up with your favorite seasonings, use sour cream, and more! You will absolutely love how it turns out!

    • Add Seasoning: I love how customizable this dressing can be just by using different seasoning blends. I recommend trying 2 tablespoons of Southwest Seasoning, or Ranch Seasoning for a fun twist to match the salad you’d like to use it on.
    • Use Sour Cream: Sour cream is great in place of the greek yogurt.
    • Make it Spicy: If you add jalapeño with the seeds, it will add a kick of heat. You can also add a dash of cayenne pepper.
    • Ways to Use: Not only is this amazing on salads, but we love using it as a dip for crudités or chips. I also love it drizzled onto buddha bowls, roasted veggies, or burrito bowls.

    How to Store Leftovers

I love being able to make this avocado dressing and use it for the next few days on different salads, bowls or just as a dip for veggies!

    • In the Refrigerator: Store homemade avocado dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
    • Make it Ahead of Time: Feel free to make this about 24 hours before you plan to serve it. As it sits, the ingredients will meld and intensify, and the dressing will become even more flavorful.
